World Mental Health Day 2024

5 days ago by Bell Group

Believe: Be Better: Be Kind

As the calendar flips to October, and the leaves start to fall, we’re reminded of a new season that represents both the ending and beginning of things. And what better time to think about our mental wellbeing. Of course, life comes with its ups and downs and it’s inevitable that there will be times when we’re confronted with loss, pain or disappointment. It’s so easy, during these moments to cut ourselves off from our feelings and from the support of others.

In the UK, the construction industry has one of the highest suicide rates across all sectors and research indicates that as many as one in five workers experience mental health issues such as anxiety, depression and burnout. #MentalHealthAwarenessDay serves as a reminder that what often brings comfort, energy and hope when we’re at our lowest points, are often those small moments of understanding, thoughtfulness and encouragement from the people around us. Sometimes we just need someone to remind us that we can approach the day with a feeling of ‘I can’ and that’s enough.

#MentalHealthAwarenessDay is dedicated to breaking down the barriers, stigmas and silent suffering of those facing mental health struggles. There’s enough toughness in the world, so today, let’s take notice and make an effort to take better care of ourselves and take better care of one another.

If you’re worried about someone, you can:

  • Let them know you’re there to listen to them without judgement
  • Someone who is struggling may find it hard to reach out, so try to keep in touch
  • Help them to get help. Reassure them it’s ok to ask for help and that support is out there
  • All Bell employees have access to confidential support via our Employee Assistance partner Health Assured.
  • Take care of yourself. Looking after someone else can be hard, so consider your wellbeing too
