I’m a Contracts Surveyor for the Plymouth Painting Branch covering Cornwall and Devon. I visit sites throughout the region (and nationally for Trinity Lighthouse) to price the works, and then manage the full project if we are then successful.
What’s it like working here?
I find working for the Plymouth Painting Branch very enjoyable. The team in Plymouth Painting is a mix of personalities and experience from Operatives through to Manager which makes for some healthy discussions but ultimately a really good team.
Bell as a whole is positive employer who do place good value in their employees supporting us through the good and tough times. This was particularly evident during the COVID pandemic where we all had enough to be worried about, Bell made sure that financial concerns would not be one of them.
Bell is constantly evolving in every aspect it can to offer employees an ever improving working environment and customers an ever improving standard and quality of service. There are exciting times ahead built on the success of the past.
How did you end up being a Contracts Surveyor?
After leaving University with a Maths Degree I felt working in Financial Services was the natural progression. I found being office based 100% of the time unstimulating so looked for a career with variance.
What are you currently working on?
Current live projects that are running at the moment:
What is your favourite part about what you do?
Being a Contract Surveyor in the Painting Branch is pretty much the perfect role for me offering the mix of office based and site based work. I really enjoy the varied nature of the role, no two days are ever the same. Some days I’m on a helicopter on my way to an offshore island to measure a lighthouse and other days I could be helping the Operations team onsite in the depths of Cornwall siting a toilet and building a compound.
Its satisfying to be involved in the projects from the very start to the very end, especially so if the project is successful and we manage to maximise the profits contributing extra to the branch performance and Bell Group success as a whole.
Quantity Surveyor
Tell us about what you do?
I am a Quantity Surveyor for Fire Protection South – I have been with Bell for 11.5 months, so almost my one-year anniversary! And I have been a QS for 7 years.
What’s it like working here?
I really enjoy working for Bell. I am surrounded by a great team of individuals where we are all working together to achieve a mutual goal. While it is great to be able to work well together, I find it is also important to be able to have at least one laugh each day! I find that I am encouraged to pursue my own personal goals which I have never experienced before, and this excites me for the potential future opportunities within the company.
How did you end up being a Quantity Surveyor?
My Dad is a Commercial Director and has worked in Construction all my life, and when I was in school making my choices for University, I was still undecided about what I wanted to do. I had always been good with numbers with Maths being my strong suit, so my Dad showed me some of the daily tasks he was undertaking at his job and from there I decided I wanted to apply to study Quantity Surveying at Glasgow Caledonian. I achieved my BSc (Hons) in 2015 and accepted a role as a Graduate QS where I started my journey.
What are you currently working on?
We are working on an array of projects currently within Fire Protection. One of the projects we are just starting is Ilford Park in Newton Abbot, this is a residential home for war veterans where we will be replacing the majority of their fire doors as well as completing some essential fire compartmentation works. Due to the nature of the property, the programme of works will be phased to ensure we can complete one section and move on as the building will be live and occupied throughout and it is our responsibility to create as little disturbance as possible.
What is your favourite part about what you do?
I am very process driven so I really enjoy finding new and easier ways of working because I believe we can always make improvements to the work we are doing. Although I am part of the Commercial team I enjoy speaking to the Supervisors and Operatives to gain an understanding of processes that may assist them with their job because if something can save them time it can ultimately save us money, which will also ensure our level of service is as smooth as possible.

Strategic Business Psychologist
Tell us about what you do?
In a nutshell, I spend a lot of my time thinking about how people think, feel and behave and the impact that has on how we work and live. We spend most of our waking hours at work and with our work colleagues and I want the people who work at Bell be happy, healthy and productive and to have a system that supports that. Day to day, that means I work to improve our recruitment, selection and onboarding processes, talent and development, coaching, culture and teamwork. No two days are the same!
What’s it like working here?
At Bell, our purpose is summarised in the statement ‘Be Better’ and I try to live by that. I feel very fortunate to work in a place that is so committed to listening, supporting and improving. We’re all working together to make a positive impact and it helps that you won’t find a nicer group of people, which makes the working day an enjoyable experience!
How did you end up being a Strategic Business Psychologist?
Well, I think I’ve always known that I wanted to work in psychology and it has taken me a lot of learning to get here. I enjoyed science at school, studied psychology at university and specialized in a Masters in Occupational Psychology and later another in Human Resource Management. Then, once I was working I developed my experience and practice to become Chartered. Over the years, I’ve worked with many different businesses across a range of different sectors and in that time I’ve continued learning and doing until I found my way here at Bell.
What are you currently working on?
Currently, I’m looking at our interviewing process and designing some training to help our hiring managers make more informed decisions. Alongside some coaching work, I’m also supporting a number of selection processes with psychometric evaluation and designing a team development workshop. There is a lot to do, but it’s a lot of fun!
What is your favourite part about what you do?
The best part about what I do are the conversations I get to have with the people I work with. I think I was born with an almost insatiable interest in how people behave and why! And if I can help others by sharing what I’ve learned, help them recognize what they’re capable of, think about how they communicate, become better in their craft or make better decisions, then we have all met our brief; to ‘Be Better.’
