We take a prominent role alongside our associate Trade Bodies and Federations to promote apprenticeships in schools and colleges and work with key partners, including our clients, to support people into the industry.
We currently have over 250 apprentices on programme. Our apprentices work towards industry recognised apprenticeship standards at L2 and above and apprentice development is enhanced through the provision of additional in company training and support. This includes the provision of core skills, working at height standards, mandatory Health & Safety training and industry specific training and accreditation including UKATA, IPAF, PASMA and CSCS.
We are innovative in our approach to apprenticeships and were form part of the collaboration leading on new industry training standards and qualifications alongside our trade association partners, the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education, and the Department for Education.
Todays Apprentice will one day have the ideas that shape our industry
We operate an annual apprentice recruitment process which enables a wide range of applicants, including students from our Bell Academies and those from disadvantaged and underrepresented groups. This supports our business vision to attract diverse talent and create a culture that promotes inclusion.
We are also an approved Centre for the delivery of Painting and Decorating Apprenticeships and currently delivers an in-house programme to young people in Scotland as part of an ongoing Scottish Government contract.
TRAINEESHIPS
Our Traineeships offer candidates the opportunity to combine an education and training programme with valuable work
experience. In addition to our construction related traineeship programme we also provide opportunities for young people to join the business in a variety of other business areas including office based roles.
In each region we have a number of Trainee Quantity Surveyors. We are committed to their development and have designed a four-year technical and professional pathway affiliated to the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) which support the progression of trainees within the business and leads them from student surveyor member through to full membership and MRICS status.
WORK PLACEMENTS
Our successful Work Placement Programme involves two weeks’ work experience with many candidates moving into full-time paid work placements, apprenticeships or paid employment. Once a job opportunity has been offered, candidates undertake a range of mandatory training as part of our induction process and are automatically included in the company’s Training Plan enabling additional training and support relevant to their job role.
MENTOR SCHEME
Every Bell apprentice is assigned an experienced and knowledgeable Mentor to assist them with their progression and also to provide an additional layer of pastoral support. Our Mentors remain with the apprentice throughout the duration of their training programme to help them develop the skills and knowledge they need to meet the industry standard they are working towards. Many of our current appointed Mentors joined the company as apprentices or trainees themselves and bring with them a wealth of both sector and business knowledge. Operating a successful Mentor Scheme ensures that this knowledge is passed down through the generations and sustained within the business.
VIRTUAL WORK EXPERIENCE (VWEX) – GLOBAL
Launched in 2020, our VWEX Programme aims to offer an opportunity for young people and/or long-term unemployed individuals to learn about the huge range of career prospects in our organisation and the wider construction industry, inspiring them to consider a career within the sector. With connections in Ghana, Zimbabwe, and Kenya, we can run this programme with UK and overseas participants, offering students an enriching global experience.
A typical VWEX Programme can run from 2 days to a full week and includes a wide range of structured activities alongside a main challenge task. We draw on a wealth of expertise from Bell Group staff, plus external experts from the wider construction industry. They will run insight workshops and interactive sessions, culminating in a five minute style pitch by participants to an expert panel to showcase their learnings. All participants receive a certificate of participation, reference, and skills assessment.
